Citation checker software for law firms and paralegals

7 min read

Citation checker software for a law firm should confirm that every case and statute in a draft exists, that the name, court and year match, and that the pin cite falls inside the opinion. It should flag what it cannot find instead of guessing. Most small firms can finish the evaluation in one afternoon with a real brief.

What the software must check

  • Existence: the reporter cite resolves to a real opinion.
  • Identity: case name, court and year match the opinion.
  • Pin cites: the cited page sits inside the opinion.
  • Statutes: the title and section exist in the current U.S. Code or CFR.
  • Unknowns: anything unmatched is flagged, never shown as verified.

Courts have sanctioned attorneys for filing briefs that cited cases that do not exist, so the flagging behavior matters more than the interface. A checker that quietly passes an unmatched citation is worse than none.

Cite checking is not the same as a citator

A citator tells you whether a case is still good law. A citation checker tells you whether the citation is real and accurate. Many firms need both, but the second is the one that prevents the embarrassing filing. If a matter turns on whether a case was overruled, keep a citator seat for that matter.

How paralegals fit into the workflow

The efficient setup is a paralegal running the check on every draft and giving the attorney a short list: verified, not found, ambiguous. The attorney reviews only the exceptions and reads the opinions that carry the argument. That turns an hour of manual lookup into minutes and leaves a record of what was checked.

If you are deciding whether to add a paralegal for this work, a salary benchmarking tool such as paralegal pay bands for your market helps you price the hire against a software subscription.

A 30 minute trial plan

  • Take a recent brief with at least 15 citations.
  • Run it through each tool and count verified, flagged and missing citations.
  • Plant one wrong pin cite and one invented case, and see if each tool catches them.
  • Check whether it accepts DOCX and PDF so no one retypes citations.
  • Compare the monthly cost for your headcount.

What it should cost

Standalone cite checkers and research platforms with built-in checks vary widely, and several publish no prices. CaseCode includes citation checking in every plan: 149 USD per month for one user, 349 USD for up to five and 799 USD for up to fifteen, with 50 percent off on annual billing. Whatever you evaluate, get the limit on checks per month in writing.
