Legal research software cost for a small law firm

7 min read

Legal research software for a small firm costs anywhere from about 150 USD a month for a single user on a flat plan to several hundred dollars per attorney per month on a full platform contract. The big platforms do not publish prices, so the honest answer for them is a range you confirm in writing. This article shows how to compute your own number.

Why the sticker price misleads

A quote for one seat is not the cost of research for your firm. Three things change the total: the number of people who need access, the length of the contract and the add-ons that sit outside the base plan. Citation analysis, state materials and practice area libraries are common examples of items priced separately.

Per seat pricing versus per firm pricing

Per seat pricing multiplies by headcount. A firm with three attorneys and two paralegals pays for five seats whether or not the paralegals research daily. Per firm pricing sets a ceiling by team size instead. CaseCode, for example, charges 149 USD per month for one user, 349 USD for up to five users and 799 USD for up to fifteen, and annual billing takes 50 percent off.

Flat plans trade flexibility for predictability. Check the monthly limits on research questions and cite checks, because they decide whether the lower plan really fits. Practice includes 1,500 shared questions and 600 cite checks a month, which is a lot for a five person firm.

A worked example for a five person firm

  • Two attorneys, one associate and two paralegals need access.
  • Per seat: multiply the quoted monthly seat price by five and add any add-ons and state libraries.
  • Per firm: one Practice plan is 349 USD per month, or about 2,094 USD for the year on annual billing.
  • Add one seat of a full platform only if you need formal treatment flags on a few matters.

Run the same arithmetic with the real quotes you receive. The gap is usually widest for firms where several people need occasional access.

What the cost does not include

The price of the subscription is smaller than the price of a mistake. Courts have sanctioned attorneys for filing briefs with cases that do not exist. A tool that checks each citation against the source text and flags what it cannot find lowers that risk for every draft. When you compare prices, compare what each tool does about citation risk too.

Contracts that sit next to your research matter too. If a matter turns on a vendor or lease agreement, a contract review tool such as AI contract review that reads every clause covers that task at a separate price, so keep it out of the research budget.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Is the price per seat, per firm or per contract term?
  • What happens to the price at renewal?
  • Which libraries and tools are add-ons?
  • Are there limits on questions or cite checks?
  • Can we cancel monthly, or is there a minimum term?
  • Is client data used to train models?

If you want a flat price to compare against, see the CaseCode plans and the Westlaw alternative for solo attorneys and small firms page, then paste a recent brief into the citation checker to test the product on your own work.
